Ass I mentioned before in my general guide, it is a very good idea to become familiar with the different adult DVD studios out there before deciding what to buy. I will attempt to give you an insight into some of the best adult DVD studios available today, the selection is based on the hundreds of adult DVD's I have seen/reviewed until today which has given me an idea on who provides consistently good porn. I will update this page when new studios or trends emerge. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some of the studios who consistently produce high quality movies. I will add more studios at a later time.
Arguably the biggest adult DVD studio in the world, it started as a hardcore magazine in Sweden in 1965 but moved to video in the early 90's. You'd be hard pressed to find a Private DVD with low production values, in fact, I don't think I can remember any! Expect to pay about $10 more for this DVD's but you will get perfect quality video and audio, multiple languages (audio and/or subtitles), previews of other Private titles, Porn Star profiles, behind the scenes and the like. You will also find some of the hottest european women in the porn industry, exotic locations (Private Tropical series) and many different genres, from the couples oriented to the extreme hardcore. Some of the best productions were made under the helm of Pierre Woodman, an award winning director who had an eye for beautiful women and was able to bring the best out of his cast in virtually all of his movies, some may argue that the sex in Private movies is formulaic, and even though that may be true in some labels (Private-Penthouse from Antonio Adamo comes to mind) the eye candy has always been there and the sheer variety of videos more than makes up for those few instances. It's amazing how much new talent this studio manages to gather every year, and the main thing is that the great majority is European, young and Silicon-free women. Highly recommended are labels such as Private Black Label and Private Gold, some of which offer the highest production values ever in the porn industry (Private Gladiator, Tatiana, Private Millionaire, etc.), Private Tropical directed by Alejandro del Mar with exotic locations in tropical beaches and plenty of hot women and outdoor sex, Private Penthouse directed by Antonio Adamo offering plot based movies with plenty of gorgeous women and meticulously set up scenes only spoiled by the lack of heat and over-use of camera effects in some of those scenes, Private The Best which is a compilation of related scenes from previous Private movies, themes include best boobs, best anal sex, best orgies, etc., Private Life which is a collection of interviews and scenes of the main Private female stars like Sylvia Saint, Laura Angel, Jennifer Stone, Lucy Lee among others. Widely known for their Barely Legal series, one of the most popular teen-sex series of all time, specially under the direction of Clive McLean. You can expect plenty of variety from this studio, including ethnic themes (Asian Fever, Young Latin Girls), feature films like Brazilian Snake, anal sex (Professianals), other teen sex series like Real College Girls, Young Pink, Young Sluts, Campus Confessions and Young Girl Fantasies, and even movies directed by legendary director Pierre Woodman (Hustler XXX and Superfuckers) . Most of their movies feature beautiful young natural girls and will last under 2 hours, with the exception of the Hustler XXX series directed by Pierre Woodman which can go for longer. This studio seems to try to get new talent for their movies generally avoiding big-name female porn-stars which can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your preferences; I guess that is due to their focus on teen-sex productions. The quality of their DVD's has always been very good in my experience and will often include interviews and previews of other Hustler productions. Evil Angel revolutionized the adult industry in the 1990's by introducing the concept of "owning your own movies." The producer-directors at Evil Angel pay to shoot and print their movies, and Evil Angel staffs the sales department to sell the movies. This model encourages directors to spend money to shoot the best movies that they can. This company is considered by many as the king of Gonzo genre. In my experience, older DVD's (before 2003) from Evil Angel tend to be lacking in the video quality department, and that is because they were mainly movies originally released in the VHS format that were ported to DVD without being properly re-masterized. In the last few years though, Evil Angel has been producing a good quantity and quality of movies, most of them go for over 2 hours and even though you pay a little bit more for this productions you can expect to see movies with plenty of wall to wall sex, energetic scenes (sometimes rough), orgies, interracial sex and a wealth of extra features such as extra scenes, behind the scenes, interviews, other Evil Angel titles and picture galleries the performers. Some of it's directors/producers include John “Buttman” Stagliano, John Leslie (Voyeur, Fresh Meat and Crack her Jack), Joey Silvera (New Girls, Hellcats, Please! and Service Animals), Rocco Siffredi (True Anal Stories, Initiations, Animal Trainer), Christoph Clark (Beautiful Girls, Big Natural Tits, Euro Angels), Jules Jordan and Justin Slayer (Just Fuckin, Black Pipe Layers). This company started in 2004. It seems to have split from another company called Zero Tolerance. Even today, they both produce very similar movies. Their productions are of a very high standard, they pay good attention to things like costume, make up, good sound, perfect lighting. Don't expect to see any plots in their movies, they are all without exception wall to wall sex. They tend to use well established porn stars, unlike other studios that look for new talent. That can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you are looking for. Their DVD's feature plenty of anal sex, threesomes and even the occasional orgy, they are also very energetic scenes but not as rough as Evil Angel movies can be. Some of their best titles include About Face 2, Camel Hoes 2, Cum on In 2, Fresh Pink 2, Lick it Up and Share the Load. I first saw movies from this studio when they were starting in 2001 and I have to say that they didn't cause a good impression on me. The video quality of the movies was not the best and the performers were average looking at best. I didn't see any of their movies for the next couple of years but since then I can definitely say that they have improved dramatically. Now their movies are some of the most popular out there. Their DVD's are very well made with quality video and audio, they specialize in all sex features and the only problem I still find with them is that, in my opinion, the movies are no 100% consistent; more specifically, the women in some of their movies are not very attractive, even in their latest productions. But they release a healthy number of titles every month and so you have a very good chance of finding plenty of material you'll like in their very extensive catalogue. Some of the themes include Interracial, Orgies, Asian, Teen sex, Cum Swapping, POV and plenty of anal action. They have too many of good movies for me to mention here. All of their movies last over 2 hours and are always accompanied by a large number of previews, you'll often find behind the scenes and interviews with performers. Smash Pictures started in 2002 and since then have been producing a steady stream (no pun intended) of quality titles, they specialise in All-Sex movies with talent from Europe and the USA. I don't think I can point many faults with the 10 movies I have seen from this studio so far, their performers tend to be very young and attractive and their productions of a very high standard. Their Legal Skin series reminds me a lot of the Hustler series Barely Legal, both extremely popular with pornsumers in search for teen-sex movies. It's a real pity that not many titles can be found in Australia, currently I have only been able to found them in companies such as Sharon Austen and Uncut DVD. Legal Skin Vol. 18 was particularly good, also Cum Catchers, Teen Idol and Moving Violations didn't disappoint. All very highly recommended. Very similar to Smash Pictures. This is a fairly newcomer studio which started in 2005 (although Swank magazine goes a way back). They have been focusing in 4 genres as of late, teen sex (Just 18 and Swank XXX Teens series), Leg fetish (Leg Action Series), Big Boobs (Gent Series) and Threesomes (Raw Sex Trio Series). In my opinion Just 18 and Swank XXX teens have been the best so far. All their DVD's have excellent image and audio quality, they take their time setting up the scenes with good lightning and the girls always look hot. The only problem I have been able to identify is that the previews in their DVD's are always the same, they don't provide many new extras and the navigation is identical in every single one, they also tend to put 5 or 6 phone sex ads right at the beginning of their DVD's, and even though that is not a big issue, it does become annoying after a while having to skip through all 6 of them. I really hope to see more titles from this company in the future and for them to become available here in Australia. They tend to be priced a few dollars higher than titles from companies like Smash, 3rd Degree and Zero Tolerance, even though their movies don't last as long. But of the 17 Swank movies that I have seen so far, only 1 disappointed. Started in 2003 and produces exclusively Gonzo movies. Virtually indistinguishable from 3rd Degree Productions, they both share the same crisp images in their movies, attention to detail (good sound, lightning, make up) and even the duration of their movies, which is just under 2 and a half hours in all of their titles. They have an excellent website where you can check all their DVD's in great detail, including list of performers, covers and very good quality screenshots from the actual movie (3 pics from each scene). I have over 70 Zero Tolerance titles in my private collection, most are good/great. Some of my favorites include : Goo 4 Two, Strip Tease then Fuck, the whole Virgin Surgeon Series, Wet Dreams Cum True and the whole series of Who's Your Daddy. |
